Six tips for junior creatives

Six practical pieces of advice for junior creatives that build trust, cut stress and help you learn faster in your first month and beyond.

A group of working designers, illustrators and creative leads have boiled down six plain moves every junior should try in their first month — and many seniors could stand to remember them, too. These are small habits that make you reliable, easier to mentor and quicker to get better work entrusted to you.

The six habits that matter

  • Be a safe pair of hands. Creative director Asa Rodger’s rule is simple: polish the basics. Deliver clean files on time, keep assets organised and tidy your copy. Reliability gets you repeat assignments long before genius does.
  • Ask questions — out loud. Designer Matthew Gallagher’s advice cuts to the chase: he urges juniors to probe and learn directly from people around them.
“Ask all the ‘stupid’ questions,” — Matthew Gallagher
  • Talk to people. Illustrator Nosheen Ahmed warns that screens kill connection. Put the phone down, introduce yourself, and use in-person chats to build the relationships that lead to mentoring and referrals.
  • Explain your choices. Designer Kultar Ruprai wants juniors who can defend their work. Don’t shrug and say something “felt right.” Tie each decision to a clear outcome: what this element does, for whom, and why.
  • Network where you are. Brand designer Matthew McGuigan points out that useful connections can form anywhere — coffee queues, events or even waiting for a sports court. Be curious; serendipity rewards people who show up.
  • Cut yourself some slack. 3D artist Andre Schneider’s reminder is the quiet one everyone needs: mistakes are normal and most people are winging it. Relaxing into the learning curve keeps you productive rather than paralysed.

These aren’t career tricks; they’re professional manners plus a mindset: be reliable, be curious, explain yourself, and treat other people as human opportunities to learn. Taken together, they shorten the path from intern to someone teams actually want to rely on.
